A field hand lens without the 30× theatre

Higher magnification narrows the field of view and shortens the working distance. For many field tasks, a good 10× loupe is more useful than a cheap “30×” model that demands near-contact with both eye and specimen.

Why 10× is useful

Leaf surfaces, bark pores, buds, seeds, small fungal structures, insect features, and mineral grains are often readily examined at moderate magnification. A wider field also makes the target easier to find in the first place.

Optics before LEDs

An integrated light is convenient in shade, but it cannot repair severe edge distortion or chromatic aberration. A well-made lens assembly matters more than an ornamental constellation of LEDs.
