A plant-care kit with an actual job description

A tool earns its place when it removes a recurring class of error. In propagation, the usual ones are crushed or ragged cuts, mixed-up specimens, erratic watering, and records that disappear into memory.

Cutting tools

For small stems, a clean sharp edge and easy disinfection matter more than the heroic mass of the secateurs. A crushed stem is simply a larger, less controlled wound.

Labels

A useful label should outlive your recollection of what went into the pot. At minimum: taxon or cultivar, date, and source of the material.

Watering

When plants are crowded, a narrow spout and controllable flow are more useful than sheer vessel capacity. A large watering can is excellent only if its weight and flow do not turn irrigation into local flooding.
